World Events

In order to create a realistic and dynamic simulated world AirwaySim incorporates various different world events to the scenarios. The events can be based on real history, or can be purely random with no real historical background.

Types Of Events

The main types of events are:

  • World events based on real history
    • Some major events, such as the 9/11, have been modelled into the simulations based on what has happened in real life.
    • In these cases the event takes place at the exact same date as in real life and the effects of the event are modelled in a similar fashion.
  • World events generated by the system with no relation to real history
    • Our database consists of nearly a hundred of different events that are non-historical. These are automatically generated into each simulation scenario.
    • The events range from small airport-level event to major global events.
  • Geopolitical events
    • All major geopolitical events such as independence declarations, country breakups or unifications (like Germany) are included in the events throughout the entire history.
    • For more information please see this manual chapter.
  • Airport changes
    • Airports opening, closing or relocating are also part of the events. They are also modelled to match the real history.
    • For more information please see this manual chapter.
Note: The events system is an optional module and might not be enabled in all scenarios.

Events In The News

All events that are active or have happened recently can be seen from Dashboard and the World News section there.

Effects Of Events

The world events can cause for example following effects:

  • Temporary changes to passenger and/or cargo demand. These changes are clearly displayed at the Route Planning pages.

  • More delays and/or cancellations to flights. In route details these delays and cancellations are listed under "Force majeure (unexpected event)" reason code.

The level of and type of each event will determine the effects to airline operations, and they are broadly described in the news text of the event. In some events the effects last only a few days but some events may be much longer and will take months to recover (in such case the recovery is usually gradual, i.e. normal figures will return bit by bit).

If the event is causing changes in passenger or cargo demand, an additional dataset will appear in the demand charts at Route Planning pages. The current actual demand with the effects of this event are shown in orange color in the charts (in the following picture the second bar from the left on each day).

Delays and cancellations can be seen at Flight Delays page, or at the detailed data of each route. Event delays are always classified as unexpected events.

Major Historical Events

Like mentioned earlier some of the events that have had a major impact on airline operations have been modelled into AirwaySim and they happen always at the exactly same date as in real life. Since the events and their date are known and players are aware of their existence they will become somewhat easier to manage compared to the unexpected random events.

The major historical events currently modelled are:

  • 2001-09-11: Terrorist attack in the United States. Expect severe flight cancellations/delays and drop of passenger demand, especially in the US.
  • (...)

There are also other events that are based on real history but their overall effects are smaller than of these listed, and for that reason they are not listed here.
