While AirwaySim aims to be a truly realistic and accurate simulation rather than a simple game, we have still created a simple scoring system in order to easily compare the overall performance of different airlines within the game world.
Remember that you as the CEO of the airline will ultimately decide what is your target and what are your goals when running the airline. Getting a high score value is not the aim for all players and scoring high does not have to be your goal in the simulation.
Scoring Principles
Each airline is automatically calculated a numerical score value based on the statistics of the airline.
The score is updated on regular intervals and can always be seen for example from the airline information pages. The highest possible value of the score depends on the number of airlines in that particular game world. So the score value between two different games can't be directly compared.
Purpose of this score value is to create a single and simple numerical value to compare the overall performance of airlines and where simply being biggest is not automatically the best.
Elements Of The Airline Score
The statistics included in the score calculation are:
- Pre-tax profit/loss (prev. financial quarter)
- Total operating revenue (prev. financial quarter)
- Profit margin (prev. financial quarter)
- Company brand & image
- Oldest airlines (airline age)
- Airline Credit Rating
- Number of weekly flights
- Number of airports served
- Current aircraft fleet size
- Average aircraft fleet age
- Average aircraft condition
- Fleet utilization (avg. flt hrs / day / plane)
- Departure punctuality
- Available Seat Kilometres (mil. km, last 30 days)
- Revenue Passenger Kilometres (mil. km, last 30 days)
- Available Freight Tonne Kilometers (mil. km, last 30 days)
- Revenue Freight Tonne Kilometres (mil. km, last 30 days)
- Passenger Load Factor (last 30 days)
- Cargo Load Factor (last 30 days)
- Transported passengers (previous year)
- Transported cargo (previous year)
- Fuel burn per Revenue Passenger Kilometre (last 30 days)
- Fuel burn per Revenue Freight Tn Kilometre (last 30 days)
Score Calculation
The calculation method is simple. For each of the stats the maximum number of points achievable is the number of airlines in the scenario. The airlines in position #1 get this amount of points, and the last airline(s) in that stats category will get 1 point. In case of shared rankings (e.g. 3 airlines in rank #1) the shared ranks receive the same points (e.g. first three max points, and fourth will have points equalling the fourth ranking). The stats involving cargo are naturally only included if the cargo features are enabled in that particular game world.
The system also calculates a maximum achievable score value which is simply all the scores of rank #1 combined factored by *0.95. This maximum score can be seen at the airline information pages next to the actual score value. In the following image our score is 8844 and maximum possible score is 9700. (Note that in normal cases no airline can ever obtain the maximum score since the array of different statistics involved is so diverse.)
